What to Do after a Car Accident

Your risk of being involved in an auto collision in Vancouver depends on several factors, including your driving experience, the time of day or night that you drive, the roads you are traveling, the weather, and the other drivers on the road during the time that you are in your vehicle. While you never want your car to be in an accident, it’s always a good idea to know exactly how to react, which is why we’ve come up with some tips to help you out.

Remain Calm

A car accident can be scary, but staying calm after it occurs can help you to make the right decisions.

Phone the Authorities

First, check to see if anyone is injured. Make a phone call for an ambulance for anyone who has been hurt. Call your insurer and the police, answering any questions they might have.

Use Emergency Cones

If you have them available, put out a few emergency cones to alert other drivers that an accident has occurred. If the accident occurs during the night, you might want to put out flares.

File an Accident Report

Did you know that filing an accident report can speed up your insurer’s response? Once the police arrive, insist on having a police report filed. You should, however, avoid taking blame for the accident. Make sure that you provide the same details to your ICBC contact.

Obtain Information

It’s important to exchange information with the other drivers involved in the incident. Just remain calm when speaking with other people and talk quietly if other people are shouting to get them to calm down. You should obtain all of the following information: insurance details, name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and license plate number. You might want to write it down, so you don’t have to worry about remembering it.

If Needed, Call for a Tow Truck

If your vehicle is seriously damaged and you can’t drive it, call for a tow truck. If you want, you can contact our auto body shop while you wait and let us know to expect your vehicle. We have two convenient locations – one in Vancouver and one in Richmond. In all honesty, even if your vehicle looks safe to drive, you should have it towed and checked for safety reasons.

Document the Accident

If you have a phone with a camera, now is a good time to take photographs. You should take pictures of all of the vehicles involved, paying special attention to any damage.
